In today’s fast-paced IT industry, it’s crucial to find a balance between work and personal life. Taking a break to engage in activities that improve our well-being and contribute to society is essential. Our colleague, Alina, recently shared her rewarding experience volunteering for an afforestation event with CAR (Clubul Alpin Roman Cluj). In this blog post, we explore the significance of volunteering in the IT industry and its positive impact on our lives and communities.
Finding Inspiration
Volunteering provides a special chance to make a meaningful impact and be part of a purposeful community. Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to join an afforestation event, where we came together to plant trees and restore the local ecosystem. And despite the physical challenges of climbing steep slopes, the experience proved to be manageable and rewarding, thanks to breaks, camaraderie, and essential equipment.
First-time Afforestation Experience
Participating in the afforestation event marked my debut in such a venture, bringing a sense of novelty and excitement to the experience. It was an opportunity to learn and contribute to the environment in a new and meaningful way.
Role and Tasks
The staff from Clubul Alpin Roman Cluj provided us with a detailed explanation of our tasks. Most of us were assigned to use shovels for digging holes, while others were responsible for planting the seedlings. At the site, the forest rangers demonstrated the proper technique for planting the trees. We also received a safety briefing to ensure we avoided accidents with sharp tools. Personally, I was equipped with a shovel, and depending on the terrain, it varied between being easy or challenging due to the presence of roots. Despite my initial struggle, I managed to dig twenty holes before switching to planting the seedlings. Working in teams, we tackled the challenges presented by the terrain, with each person fulfilling their role.
Overcoming Challenges
Surprisingly, the event was enjoyable despite the physical demands. The atmosphere fostered a relaxed ambiance, filled with laughter, explanations, and camaraderie. While we faced obstacles such as challenging terrains and stubborn roots, we learned to approach the task with patience and efficiency.
New Learnings and Insights
Participating in the event provided valuable knowledge, especially in the proper use of shovels. While the organizers provided instructions, I was fortunate to work alongside an older gentleman who shared insightful advice. Instead of forcefully digging downward, we were advised to clear the area first and then dig upward, placing emphasis on the initial layer. This vital lesson not only conserved energy but also improved overall efficiency. Isn’t that a simple cool thing?
Environmental and Community Impact
Our work aimed to rejuvenate areas affected by strong winds. The signs of natural regeneration were evident, and we hope our efforts contribute to a healthier environment and a thriving community.
Memorable Moments and Experiences
One of the most cherished aspects of the afforestation event was the opportunity to connect with the members of CAR. Their organizational skills and commitment to everyone’s safety were commendable, considering the diverse age participants, spanning from children to seniors. Despite the demanding nature of the work, they offered us support and encouragement, funny jokes, and occasionally reminded us to take breaks in the shade of the forest. It was a memorable experience, fueling my desire to participate in future activities organized by the same group.
Conclusion & Encouragements
Based on my experience, I want to offer some advice and encouragement to colleagues who may be considering participating in similar afforestation projects. While the work can be physically demanding, it is also enjoyable and rewarding. My advice is not to be intimidated by the perceived difficulty level, just trust in yourself. You can do it! You’ll feel a sense of responsibility to do your part, but there is no pressure, and the atmosphere is relaxed. Take breaks when you need them and remember that you are up there doing what you can.
Finally, embrace the opportunity to disconnect from daily routines, breathe in the fresh air, and recharge your spirits with positive energy!
